FLOHAUS Gallery is pleased to announce a group exhibition, The Recipe, featuring Yingzhe (Boo) Chen, Soobin Jeon, Qin Shen, and Lillian van Veen. The exhibition will be on view from September 17 through October 4, 2026, with an opening reception on September 17 from 6–8 PM. Bringing together four distinct practices, the exhibition begins as a journey into the ingredients and inherited “recipes” through which our bodies come to take form.
The Recipe looks at the body as something continuously adjusted through the forces around us. Like a recipe passed down, ideas of gender, beauty, discipline, and self-image become ingredients in the making of a body. Within contemporary urban life, especially New York’s dense visual culture, these instructions come from everywhere: advertising, fashion & beauty culture, social expectation, etc. At the same time, the exhibition questions the ideals / pressures that contemporary society places onto the body, and how these forces shape the way we see ourselves. Bringing together four artists working across painting, sculpture, and mixed media, the exhibition asks what happens when these inherited recipes are rewritten.
Yingzhe (Boo) Chen (b. 2001) is a New York–based artist working with installation and sculpture. Born in Shanghai, China, Chen’s practice explores gender norms and femininity, with a focus on the transition from girlhood to womanhood and the ways the body becomes shaped, observed, and understood through external forces. Chen received an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in 2025 and a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in 2023. Recent exhibitions include Returning to Flow at Flowing Space, Wondering Path at SVA Gallery, and Fragments of Being at Morgan Lehman Gallery.
Soobin Jeon is a mixed-media artist based in Boston. Born in New Jersey and raised between New York and Seoul, Jeon works across mixed media and ceramics and currently practices at the Harvard Ceramics Program. She received her BFA in Graphic Design from the School of Visual Arts in New York. Through color, shape, and shifting perspectives, her work explores themes of hope, security, acceptance, and autonomy, often creating quiet moments of solace through disciplined, organic forms.
Qin Shen (b. 2001) is a Brooklyn-based artist from Changshu, China. Primarily working in painting, her practice also extends into mixed-media printmaking, sculpture, and drawing. Her work explores memory, bodily sensation, and the shifting relationship between past and present, often focusing on ephemeral experiences and the traces they leave within the body, objects, and places. Shen received her MFA in Fine Arts and BFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York. She has presented a solo exhibition at :iidrr Gallery and exhibited at venues including the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences, Helm Contemporary, and FLOHAUS Gallery. Her work has been featured in New American Paintings, ArtEchive, Bold Journey, Atopia Art Magazine, and Canvas Rebel.
Lillian van Veen (b. 2003) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn, New York. Their practice spans painting, soft sculpture, and video, and explores the adornments and histories of the transmasculine body. Movement and clothing are presented as modes of accessing temporal identities and transformative realities. Van Veen’s work has been shown at Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam, The Tomayko Foundation in Pittsburgh, 440 Gallery in Brooklyn, and Trans Art Fest. They received a B.H.A. in Humanities and Arts from Carnegie Mellon University in 2025.
